Atletico Madrid Coach will stay and look to extend his contract
After falling to a shock defeat to Cornella, Diego Simeone dropped a bombshell in his post-match interview which hinted that his future at Atletico Madrid may not be as clear as first thought.
Speaking to the media after the game, he was asked about why his team have suffered upsets in the early rounds of the Copa del Rey for the past three years in a row.
“We’ll look for solutions if we’re here next year,” he said.
This was the second year in a row in which a team from Segunda B has knocked Atleti out of the tournament, far from the glory days of Copa del Rey final victory at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in 2013.
That is now in the past and Simeone is looking to the future, as, despite his shock comments, he wants to remain at the club beyond 2022.
His current contract runs out in 18 months, but as MARCA reported recently, talks have already begun to extend that link between the two parties.
The club and the dressing room know that the defeat to Cornella was humiliating but have not changed their position, knowing that they have enjoyed a great start to the season.
Simeone has no doubts about the project and will likely clarify his comments in the days to come.
Simeone’s statement was most probably aimed at keeping the criticism of the team on him, as he doesn’t mind taking stick as the team’s undisputed leader.
The aim is to reduce the pressure on the players, in both the good times and the bad, and to focus on being successful moving forward in the future.
