Barcelona prioritise Eric Garcia over attacking reinforcementsPablo Garca

Barcelona plan to strengthen in the January transfer window. Having held meetings with coach Ronald Koeman, the club have set their priorities for January.

A central defender, a centre-forward and a midfielder have all been identified as they main targets, but a new face to come in and make the backline more solid is top of the list.

Attack and defence are their main concerns. The Catalans worked all summer to reinforce in those areas, but ultimately proved unable to do so.

Eric Garcia is their primary target at centre-back, with their defensive concerns outweighing their worries further up the pitch, even despite their continued struggles in front of goal.

Barcelona are going to push as hard as they can to convince Manchester City to let Eric Garcia leave in January, six months before his contract expires, but the English side don’t appear too willing to do so as things stand.

Carles Tusquets intends to meet with the presidential candidates in order to determine whether there is an agreement that the defender is the man they want at the club.

The club’s pursuit of Memphis Depay has taken a back seat for now, at least until the defensive issues are addressed. It is almost impossible for a new player to arrive in midfield, with that being the third of three areas they want to strengthen.

In terms of departures, it looks increasingly likely that Carles Alena will leave for Getafe, while Junior Firpo could also be on his way out.
