Barcelona vs Sevilla: A test of champions

Barcelona and Sevilla meet in a clash between two of LaLiga Santander’s heavyweights this Sunday evening at the Camp Nou.

Both have enjoyed strong starts to the 2020/21 season and they’re coming into the match in good form, with this big early-season clash set to provide further signs of where these two sides stand.

Julen Lopetegui’s team will want to show, against a club who always expect to compete for silverware, that they themselves have a chance of mounting a title challenge this season.

Ronald Koeman’s Catalans are in fine form, though.

Their wins against Villarreal and Celta Vigo have brought smiles back to the faces of everyone around the Camp Nou after their humiliating end to last season, losing 8-2 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Dutch coach is impressing; he’s found a system that works, and his players have shown a good attitude so far.

On top of the above, Lionel Messi is slowly looking happier, despite his failed attempts to leave and obvious discontent with the club’s board of directors and president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Philippe Coutinho and Ansu Fati have been two of the brightest sparks in Spain’s top tier this term, and they’ll both be hoping that Messi can help out against his favourite opponents.

In 3,347 minutes against the Andalusians, the Barcelona captain has scored an impressive 37 goals.

Sevilla themselves have shown that they’re not a side to be flustered this season, though, and they’ve been an impressive outfit since Lopetegui took charge.

He’ll have a plan for Barcelona, just like he had in successful Europa League ties against Manchester United and Inter last season, and also in the European Super Cup final against Bayern Munich.

This Sevilla side don’t know how to play for a draw. Barcelona will set the tone for the game, but Sevilla will be ready to adapt and to try to cause problems of their own.

They do, however, tend to find life considerably more complicated at the Camp Nou.
