The father of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has started his application to become a French citizen.

Despite his son playing a leading role in securing Britain’s exit from the European Union, Stanley Johnson doesn’t share the same position as Boris.

“It is not a question of becoming French. If I understand it correctly, I already am. My mother was born in France, her mother was French and her grandfather was also French. For me it is a question of claiming what I already am and for that I am happy,” he told RTL.

“We cannot tell the English that they are not European. Europe will always be more than the common market and the European Union,” Stanley Johnson stated, but claimed that “having a link with the European Union” was important.

Despite Boris Johnson’s determination to get Brexit done, many of his relatives were not in favour of the move.

His father voted against Brexit, as did his siblings, journalist Rachel Johnson and politician Jo Johnson.
