FC Barcelona – La Liga Luis F. Rojo gives his opinion
Barcelona had an excellent first half at El Alcoraz on Sunday night and should have gone into the break with a two- or three-goal advantage. Yet, the score was just 1-0 in the Blaugrana’s favour.
The second half was not as impressive as the first and, with just one goal separating the two sides, Huesca grew in confidence the longer the match went on and put Barcelona under pressure at the end.
Sunday night highlighted a recurring problem for Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona: an inability to put the game beyond doubt. They need many chances in order to find the back of the net.
Lionel Messi was not clinical against Huesca, Martin Braithwaite did not have a chance in the whole game, Pedri missed two clear chances, and Antoine Griezmann did not touch the ball in the 10 minutes he was on the pitch.
The most active player in attack was Ousmane Dembele, but he also failed to beat Alvaro Fernandez. And meanwhile, Luis Suarez is up to his neck in goals at Atletico Madrid. The problem of lacking a goalscorer is nothing new, it has just become more evident as the season has gone on. Barcelona have already lost plenty of points because of this.
The Catalans failed to sign Memphis Depay last summer, we’ll see if they can in the January transfer window. Ansu Fati’s recovery from injury will be key, too. But if Barcelona cannot resolve their problems in front of goal, they will be unable to meet their targets for this season.
