Is Richard Gasquet thinking about retirement?

Is Richard Gasquet thinking about retirement? Best ATP ranking at number 7 in the world, two semifinals reached at Wimbledon and one at the US Open, two participations in the Finals and fifteen victories on the main circuit: this is the ‘curriculum’ of French Richard Gasquet, who turned 34 on 18 June.

A tennis player of Gasquet’s talent, penalized at times by a physique on which mother nature has great faults, and at other times by a too defensive tennis, which has never really and completely thought about evolving.

The Frenchman, who also boasts three Masters 1000 finals in his career, now occupies the 49th position in the world rankings. This year he reached the semi-final in Sofia and the quarterfinals in Montpellier and Dubai, coming out instead in the second round of Flushing Meadows and in the first of Roland Garros, beaten by Roberto Bautista Agut.

Gasquet evokes his farewell to the world of tennis

Engaged in the ATP 250 event in Sofia, Bulgaria, Richard overtook Roberto Carballés Baena, Jonas Forejtek and Salvatore Caruso this week without losing a set, before defeating young Canadian Denis Shapovalov in three sets: 7-6 2 -6 0-6 the final score.

“I entered the top hundred players in the world for the first time in 2003”, said the Frenchman in the past few hours, as reported by Punto de Break, “if they had told me that in 2020 I would still be active, I would not have believed it.

To be honest, I’d like to keep playing for another couple of years, but I don’t know if that’s going to be possible. I will play next year and then I don’t know what will happen. I could retire at the end of the season or go on.

As long as I can continue to compete I will, without any doubt.” A professional for eighteen years now, in his career Richard has managed to defeat the Swiss Roger Federer twice (once in Rome, in 2011) and once the Serbian Novak Djokovic, back in 2007.

At the Roland Garros in Paris (an event at which took part in seventeen of the last nineteen editions) played at most the quarter-finals in 2016, stopped in four sets by Andy Murray after managing to overtake Thomaz Bellucci, Bjorn Fratangelo, Nick Kyrgios and Kei Nishikori. The last time Gasquet reached the third round of a Grand Slam was at the 2018 US Open.
