Norway 1-2 Serbia Haaland and Odegaard miss out
Norway 1-2 Serbia.
It has been labelled a golden generation for Norwegian football, yet neither Erling Haaland nor Martin Odegaard will be present at the 2021 European Championship after Serbia and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic shut the tournament door for the Scandinavian side.
Lazio’s midfielder scored a fantastic brace in the playoff semi final clash between the two nations and now they will face Scotland, who defeated Israel, in the next round. Haaland had a couple of chances to find the net, but squandered the opportunity, whilst Odegaard struggled to find a way into the rhythm of the match.
Odegaard’s form in 2020/21 has been a puzzle for both the coaching staff at Real Madrid and those looking in from the outside.
He was one of LaLiga Santander’s best players in 2019/20 but an injury over pre-season has left him undercooked and lacking sharpness in the matches he’s featured in this term.
Zinedine Zidane will need him up to speed quickly, especially with the Champions League soon to start, whilst the players knows he can’t afford to be slow in improving his form, otherwise his second chance at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu may pass him by.
Norway will now move forward and look to reassess the work done by the national setup, because they are producing excellent footballers, two of them generational, but Lars Lagerback has failed to deliver with those resources at his disposal.
In the other matchup in Group A, Iceland defeated Romania 2-1 whilst Hungary emerged comfortable victors in an away trip to Bulgaria.
Iceland and Hungary will now face each other to secure a place in the final of Group A’s playoff structure in November.
In the bottom league, Georgia beat Belarus 1-0 in Group D, whilst North Macedonia ended Kosovo’s dream of tournament football with a 2-1 scoreline.
