Premier League: The last war between Mourinho and Guardiola: “Maybe Jose is a doctor…”

Premier League A clash ahead of Saturday’s meeting

The last war between Mourinho and Guardiola

Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola will meet again when Tottenham and Manchester City go head to head in the Premier League this Saturday and they’ve been clashing in the press rooms ahead of the match.

In the past, they had wars of words in press conferences when they were in charge of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, most famously ahead of the 2010/11 Champions League semi-finals.

This time, they’ve been discussing injuries, after Raheem Sterling left the England squad early this past week due to a calf injury. That situation was brought up in Mourinho’s press conference and the Portuguese coach claimed that some coaches put pressure on Gareth Southgate to rest players.

“Southgate, I read he supposedly said some football club managers put pressure on the players not to play for the national team and, because of that, he feels the need to call them to try to cool down emotions and to try to control the difficult situation,” Mourinho said. “I would like him to say which are the coaches who put pressure on the players not to go.”

Given that Mourinho’s comments came up around the Sterling situation, he seemed to be suggesting that Guardiola is one of these coaches and he claimed that the forward will play in this Premier League match without any problems.

Guardiola, therefore, was asked about this in his own pre-match press conference. “Mourinho has to call the doctor from the England national team and the doctor from Manchester City,” Guardiola replied.

“Mourinho, maybe he’s a doctor. So, I don’t know. Listen, I’m not going to answer anything about Jose. I say the doctor because we’re accused of something we have not done, it’s not true. So, he has to speak with the doctors about all these other things. Don’t ask me because I’m almost 50, so I’m old enough to understand.”
