Real Madrid – La Liga Never doubted his form would return
Marco Asensio is back. Rodrygo Goes’ unfortunate injury allowed the Spaniard to retake his place in Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI against Elche and he did so again against Celta Vigo on Saturday night, marking the occasion by scoring his first goal of the season.
On top of the goal, Asensio claimed an assist as well, but the forward made a lasting impression with what was an excellent performance.
Zidane, though, isn’t surprised. Asensio himself isn’t either. They both know the work that has been put in away from the pitch, and they were both convinced that, with time, improvements would be made.
“People don’t know that accumulating games and minutes is a long process,” Asensio said after Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Celta. “I’m in that process, I’m working hard to contribute.”
Asensio took Rodrygo’s place against Granada too, and he played a wonderful pass for Casemiro to get on the end of and score. On Saturday it was Lucas Vazquez who converted his early assist, with the Galician being another who has made the most of recent opportunities.
On his return against Elche, Asensio came close to scoring only for his shot to bounce off the crossbar before being turned in by Luka Modric.
The Spaniard is facing a big season at Real Madrid, and there is hope that he can rediscover his very best form and consistency for the final stretch of the season, though there’s also an understanding that it won’t be easy.
Zidane has always believed in him and given him time. Now, while waiting for Eden Hazard to keep adding minutes, Asensio has stepped forward as one of Karim Benzema’s best partners in attack.
