Real Madrid appear to have won the race to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, despite attempts from Barcelona to land the Austrian.

Alaba made his intention of leaving Bayern Munich clear and, with his contract set to expire in the summer, the two Spanish giants fought for his highly sought after signature.

MARCA have been following Alaba’s situation closely in recent months, learning that Pini Zhavi, the Austrian’s agent, offered him to several top European clubs, but that Real Madrid now appear his likeliest destination.

Los Blancos had long been keen on the player and the demands of the player made the operation possible.

The opposite was the case with Barcelona. Zhavi spoke with the Catalans but, upon learning of the financials of the deal, decided against it.

Barcelona are looking for a central defender but have decided to focus on Manchester City’s Eric Garcia, who also sees his contract set to expire in the summer.

Real Madrid are also keen on defensive reinforcements and, given the fact that Alaba can play both in the centre of defence and at full back, the opportunity has proven too good to turn down.

PSG and Manchester United are also fighting for his signature, but the defender has always said that he would like to play in LaLiga Santander, and Real Madrid are willing to make that wish come true.
