Real Madrid – La Liga Could be rested for Alaves
Real Madrid have been planning to rest Sergio Ramos in Saturday’s game against Alaves but following their Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of Alcoyano, they may reconsider.
Without their captain on the pitch, Los Blancos have struggled to grab wins this season and this has been proved once again in their 2-1 defeat at the Estadio El Collao on Wednesday.
Ramos played in the Supercopa de Espana semi final against Athletic Club despite a problem he had with his left knee, and Real Madrid’s medical staff suggested that he would need some rest to fully recover from the knock.
In the match with the Basques, Ramos had to receive two injections, one before the warm-up and another minutes before kick off.
Following the humiliating elimination in the Copa del Rey, it should not be ruled out that Ramos could return to action against Alaves.
Meanwhile, Dani Carvajal has yet to fully recover from his injury and is not expected to force his return, while Nacho Fernandez has gone into self-isolation due to contact with a positive COVID-19 case.
This means that, even if Nacho returns, Zinedine Zidane could possibly use Lucas Vazquez at right-back and Ferland Mendy as a left-back, with Raphael Varane and Eder Militao as centre-backs in Vitoria.
Real Madrid have been defeated eight times in the last ten Champions League games without Ramos leading their defence.
The Real Madrid captain has missed four LaLiga Santander duels this season, with Los Blancos winning against Celta Vigo and Sevilla, drawing one with Villarreal and losing to Alaves at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano.
In the Copa del Rey, Real Madrid have won just one of the three games without Ramos on the pitch. They got past Unionistas de Salamanca last season but had previously lost to Leganes and were recently defeated by Alcoyano.
It has to be noted that Los Blancos have also lost games with Ramos in the starting line-up, such as the ones against Cadiz, Valencia or Athletic Club.
