Real Madrid to have less rest in the week of El Clasico

While a kick off time for the first Clasico of the season hasn’t yet been set, the Champions League schedule means that the match between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou will have to take place on Saturday, October 24.

This is because there are Champions League matches in the midweek before that weekend, as well as in the midweek after.

Given the delayed start to the season, there are back-to-back weeks of Champions League football for the first two matchdays of the continental competition.

The Champions League schedule hurts Real Madrid more than Barcelona in terms of rest time.

That’s because Real Madrid will have one less day of rest ahead of El Clasico, since they host Shakhtar Donetsk on the Wednesday before the Clasico Saturday, whereas Barcelona will play against Ferencvaros at the Camp Nou on the Tuesday.

Los Blancos will go into the LaLiga Santander match with 22 hours less rest than their rivals.

After the Clasico, Real Madrid will also have a day’s less rest than Barcelona will as they prepare for the Champions League Matchday Two.

With the Champions League nights switched around for the two teams, Real Madrid will visit Borussia Monchengladbach on the following Tuesday and Barcelona will visit Juventus on the Wednesday.

This won’t be the first time that Zinedine Zidane’s men enter a Clasico with less rest time, as the same thing happened when the first Clasico of last season was held at the Camp Nou last December.

That was a Wednesday night match and Barcelona had 29 hours more rest since their previous game was at 16:00 CEST – away at Real Sociedad – on the Saturday, while Real Madrid’s was at 21:00 CEST – away at Valencia – on the Sunday.
