The Nigerian forward grabbed a consolation goal for the Pythagoreans in their heavy defeat at Sassuolo
Simy Nwankwo scored his first goal in the 2020-21 Serie A campaign as Crotone bowed to a 4-1 loss against Sassuolo on Saturday.
The Super Eagles striker could not end his team’s losing streak in the Italian top-flight as they suffered their third straight defeat.
Simy converted from the penalty spot in the 49th minute but it was not enough to inspire Crotone to victory as Francesco Caputo’s brace and goals from Domenico Berardi and Manuel Locatelli secured maximum points for Sassuolo.
The Nigeria international played the duration for the visitors, but he received a yellow card in the 57th minute.
During the encounter, Simy managed three shots with two of them on target and he also completed four key passes – the highest made by the visitors at the Mapei Stadium – Citta del Tricolore.
Ivory Coast’s Jeremie Boga did not make the Sassuolo squad for the fixture as he continues his recovery from coronavirus but his compatriot Hamed Traore, who is on a two-year loan from Empoli, made a cameo appearance as a 90th-minute substitute while Equatorial Guinea’s Pedro Obiang replaced Morocco’s Mehdi Bourabia in the 53rd minute.
Boga contracted the virus prior to the commencement of the league season though he did not show any symptoms according to a club statement.
The victory pushed Sassuolo to the top of the Serie A table with seven points after three matches while Crotone languish at the bottom with no points after three outings.
He was not called up by Nigeria for their international friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia in Austria next week, however, Simy will be aiming to help Crotone secure their first win of the season after the international break.
They welcome defending champions Juventus to the Stadio Ezio Scida for their next league fixture on October 17.
