Thomas Partey has given his first interview since signing up with Arsenal and admits he’s been ‘overwhelmed’ by the amount of well-wishers.
The Gunners had identified Partey as a top midfield target earlier in the summer, as well as Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
However after failing to reach Lyon’s asking price for the Frenchman, Mikel Arteta’s side made a late move for Partey.
Arsenal triggered the £45million release clause in his contract late on Monday afternoon. The move was then confirmed by Atletico on Monday evening, with minutes to spare.
However, the whole saga has left a bitter taste in Diego Simeone’s mouth. That’s after his dream midfield plans were wrecked at Atletico by the Gunners.
Partey himself has penned an emotional goodbye message to Atletico’s fans. Read what he had to say here…
After now turning the page on his career, Partey has now addressed the Arsenal fans in his first interview as a Gunners player.
“Hi guys. Thanks so much for the love and for the message I have received,” he said on Arsenal’s Twitter timeline. “I can’t wait to be part of you guys, I can’t wait to join the team.
“It’s a great feeling to be part of a family like this. Thanks so much to everyone for the love, I feel so grateful and I feel so amazed to be part of you. I can’t wait to join you guys.
“And don’t forget, no Thomas, No Partey!”
Arteta explains what Partey will bring
After sealing the signing, Gunners boss Arteta explained how Partey’s dynamism will help take his side to the next level.
Arteta told Arsenal’s official website: “We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad.
“He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. Thomas brings a lot of experience from a top club and has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League.
“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system. He can contribute to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.
“I think he allows us to play different formations and he can fit in within those formation It’s a really good thing to have in a squad where, in midfield, I think we were a little bit short.”
