Wheels falling off for Man Utd, as frustrated Porto derail left-back deal

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Porto left-back Alex Telles before Monday’s transfer deadline have all but ended, according to a report.

United have earmarked a new left-back as a growing priority in recent weeks; more so as their hunt for wingers – including Jadon Sancho – continues to stall.

Porto have shown willingness to sell Telles, with the 27-year-old in the final year of his contract. What’s more, the Brazilian wants to leave, meaning this transfer window is their last chance to recoup a fee.

United have so far not reached Porto’s initial asking price of €20million (£18.1million). Reports claimed they were willing to offer increased potential bonuses, something which angered the Portuguese side, who want payment up front.

The Telegraph now says that the Red Devils have continued to dither, which has proved the final straw for Porto.

As a result of the ‘protracted’ negotiations, Porto have now raised Telles’ exit fee to over €20million. With United unwilling to match his initial fee, hopes of a deal in this window have all but crashed.

However the newspaper adds that United will likely get their top target next year. With Telles approaching the end of his contract, he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

In any case, the fact that the Red Devils are unlikely to sign Telles before Monday’s deadline is a ‘blow’ for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, The Telegraph adds.

The United boss is keen to find support for England international Luke Shaw on the left side of defence.

Solskjaer has previously referenced the fact that great United teams of the past have featured several stars fighting for one position.

United continue to work on departures

As well as potential incomings, United have also been busy working on departures from Old Trafford.

Midfielder Andreas Pereira has joined Lazio on a season-long loan deal after falling down the pecking order.

Indeed Solskjaer has revealed how Bruno Fernandes played a key role in Pereira’s decision to leave.
